The KHSAA boys sweet 16 basketball state tournament got underway yesterday at Rupp Arena in Lexington. All 3 mountain teams were in action on day one. In the opening game 13th Region champion, the Corbin Redhounds advanced to the quarterfinals after beating 14th Region champion and fellow mountain team, the Estill County Engineers 50-40. Estill County was making their first ever Sweet 16 appearance.
15th Region champion, the Pikeville Panthers, wearing blue ribbons on their shoes in honor and memory of Pikeville Policeman Scotty Hamilton who was killed in the line of duty Tuesday night, won a thrilling triple overtime game beating John Hardin 72-69. Also Wednesday Scott County edged Louisville Trinity 54-53 and Warren Central beat Southwestern 68-44.
Today’s opening round games will be University Heights against Campbell County at 12 noon, Fern Creek takes on Boyd County at 1:30, Oldham County against McCracken County at 6:30 this evening followed by Apollo against Covington Catholic around 8pm.
On Friday in the quarterfinals, Corbin plays Scott County at 12noon and Pikeville will play Warren Central at 1:30. We’ll bring you both games on AM 920 FM 95.1 WTCW.
