DISTRICT TOURNAMENTS

The opening round games of the 2012 Boys/Girls 53rd District Tournament got underway last night at Jenkins High School.  

In game one the LCC Lady Cougars advanced to the championship game by beating Cordia 89-32 and in game two the Knott County Central Patriot boys advance to the championship game beating Jenkins 62-39.

Tonight it's two more 53rd District opening round games.  Game one will be boys action as Letcher County Central takes on Cordia and game two tonight will be the girls as Knott County Central plays Jenkins.  We'll have both games live here on the Bulldog with pregame beginning for 5:30pm.

The girls 53rd championship game will be Friday at 7:00pm and the boys 53rd championship game will be at 7:00pm on Saturday all at Jenkins High School and all games will be broadcast here on the Bulldog.

In other District Tournament action last night:

In the boys 55th Breathitt County beat Riverside 77-35 and in the boys 56th Estill County over Lee County 63-53.  No score from the Hazard-Leslie County game in the boys 54th District game.

In the girls 54th Perry Central beat Buckhorn 81-28 and in the girls 56th it was Powell County over Estill County 51-48.

There's a big matchup tonight in the opening round of the boys 54th District Tournament as Buckhorn will play Perry County Central at Leslie County.


UK BASKETBALL

The UK Wildcats had a great come from behind thrilling SEC conference win over a tough Mississippi State team last night on the road in Starkville.  Kentucky came from 13 down at halftime to win by nine 73-64.

Michael Kidd-Gilchrist led UK with 18. Anthony Davis had 13 along with 11 rebounds. Darius Miller was big down the stretch and had 12. Doron Lamb and Terrence Jones had 11 each.

The Cats are 27-1 overall and 13-0 in SEC play.  With the win they claim at least a tie for the SEC regular season championship.  UK has 2 more regular season games and they play next on Saturday at home against the Vanderbilt Commodores.  Game time is 12 noon with the Countdown to tipoff at 10:30 Saturday morning and you can catch all the action on 103.9 The Bulldog, your home of the Big Blue in Letcher County.

DISTRICT TOURNAMENT

It's postseason team for high school basketball as district tournaments are getting underway this week across the state as teams hope to begin their run to the Sweet 16 State Tournament.

Many of last night's games were postponed due to the weather but a few games were played.

In Girls action last night:

In the 55th District Breathitt County beat Wolfe County 51-36 and Jackson City beat Riverside 84-22.

In the 56th Owsley County over Lee County 59-40

In Boys action last night:

In the 56th Powell County beat Owsley County 77-57.

The 53rd District Tournament games at Jenkins High School were postponed last night due to the weather and the tournament will begin tonight with LCC girls playing Cordia at 6pm and Knott County Central taking on Jenkins in boys action around 7:30pm.

Tomorrow night at 6pm it will be LCC and Cordia boys then around 7:30pm with will be Knott County Central and Jenkins Girls.

The girls championship game will be Friday at 7:00pm and the boys championship game will be at 7:00pm on Saturday.

We'll have all the action of the 53rd District Tournament from Jenkins HS live on 103.9 The Bulldog.  The pregame show will start tonight at 5:30pm.

 

UK BASKETBALL

The #1 UK Wildcats will be in action tonight in a big matchup on the road against the Mississippi State Bulldogs in Starkville.  Game time is 9:00pm.  We'll join the UK game right before tipoff tonight just after our coverage of the 53rd district tournament at Jenkins.

LETCHER COUNTY CENTRAL & JENKINS BOYS/GIRLS BASKETBALL

The Letcher County Central Cougar Boys wrapped up the regular season last night with a 20 point win over Pike County Central.  The Cougars led most of the game and their biggest lead was 31.  3 players scored in double figures led by Koree Stewart with 17, Kendall Ballou had 13 and Trenton Whitaker with 11.   The Cougars finish at 18-12 on the season and will begin play in the 53rd district tournament at Jenkins High School on Tuesday at 6pm against Cordia.

Jenkins Cavalier Boys beat the Piarist School Wednesday night 71-47 to improve to 8-18.  The Cavaliers have 2 regular season games left, at home against Betsy Layne on Friday night and at Red Bird on Saturday.  The begin play in the district tournament Monday at 7:30pm against Knott County Central.

In 14th Region boys action last night Breathitt County beat Owsley County 76-43. 

Tonight's games will feature Knott County Central at Buckhorn, Owsley County at Jackson City, Hazard at Powell County, Lee County at Wolfe County and in the WYMT Game of the Week- it will be Sheldon Clark at Perry County Central.

Tomorrow Cordia is at Hazard and Estill County plays at Buckhorn.

The Letcher County Central Lady Cougars finished the regular schedule with a  21-5 record and will begin play Monday in the district tournament against Cordia at 6:00pm.

The Jenkins Lady Cavaliers are now 9-16 as they beat  Pike County Central last night at home 56-41 and will play tonight on the road at Leslie County to finish the regular season.  The Lady Cavaliers will play Knott County Central Tuesday at 7:30pm in the District Tournament at Jenkins HS.

The 53rd District Boys AND Girls Tournament begins this Monday Feb 20th and will be held at Jenkins High School.

Monday Feb 20th at 6:00pm it will be Letcher County Central vs. Cordia girls and at 7:30pm Knott County Central and Jenkins boys will play.

Tuesday Feb 21st at 6:00pm it will be Letcher County Central vs. Cordia boys and at 7:30pm it's Knott County Central and Jenkins Girls.

Friday Feb 24th at 7:00pm will be the girls championship game and Saturday Feb 25th at 7:00pm it will be the boys championship game.


LCC WRESTLING

The Letcher County Central Cougar Wrestling team will participate in the KHSAA State Wrestling Tournament @ Kentucky Horse Park this Friday and Saturday.

The Cougar wrestlers who will be participating at state are:

Brandon Gibson: 3rd place - State Qualifier 132 pound class - Record of 26 wins and 7 losses.
Bobby McKenzie: 5th place - State Alternate 138 pound class - Record of 15 wins and 15 losses.
Jordan Gibson 5th place - State Alternate 145 pound class - Record of 24 wins and 13 losses.
Charles Philpot: 4th Place - State Qualifier 220 pound class - Record of 27 wins and 16 losses.


LCC CHEERLEADING

The Letcher County Central Cheerleaders will be competing in the KAPOS State Cheerleading Tournament at 10:00 a.m. this Saturday in Bowling Green

 

UK WILDCATS BASKETBALL

The #1 Kentucky Wildcats are back in action tomorrow(Saturday) when they take on the Ole Miss Rebels in an SEC matchup at Rupp Arena in Lexington.  Tipoff at 4:00pm with Countdown to Tipoff at 2:30pm.  The Cats will then play Mississippi State in Starkville Tuesday night at 9:00pm.

LETCHER COUNTY CENTRAL & JENKINS BOYS/GIRLS BASKETBALL

The Letcher County Central Cougar Boys picked up a solid 14th Region win last night by beating the Buckhorn Wildcats 44-37 at LCC.  It was a night of poor shooting but solid defense.  The Cougars led 17-14 at halftime and led by as many as 8. Buckhorn led by 2 a couple of times in the second half.  Logan Johnson had 10 points for the Cougars, Trenton Whitaker had 8 and Koree Stewart had 9 points along with 8 rebounds.  Trevor Easterling led Buckhorn with 13 points and their All Region player Matt Day came up with 12, about half of his game average.  The Cougars improve to 17-12 and Buckhorn falls to 20-5.  The Cougars will wrap up the regular season with a home game tonight against Pike County Central with JV at 6:00pm and Varsity at 7:30pm   We'll have tonight's game here on 103.9 The Bulldog with the Cougar Countdown Pregame Show at 7:00pm.

Jenkins Cavalier Boys played the Piarist School last night but we don't have a final score.  The Cavaliers have 2 regular season games left, at home against Betsy Layne on Friday night and at Red Bird on Saturday.

LETCHER COUNTY CENTRAL & JENKINS BOYS/GIRLS BASKETBALL

The 16-12 Letcher County Central Cougar Boys home game against the Buckhorn Wildcats last night was postponed and rescheduled for tonight at Letcher County Central with JV at 6:00pm and Varsity at 7:30pm   We'll have tonight's game here on 103.9 The Bulldog with the Cougar Countdown Pregame Show at 7:00pm.  The Cougars will wrap up the regular season Thursday at home against Pike County Central.

In 14th Region boys action last night Perry County Central beat Breathitt County 52-40.     Clay County beat Cordia 100-43.   Knott County Central beat Estill County 60-43.  Lee County over Menifee County 69-57.

Jenkins Cavalier Boys have 3 regular season games remaining on the schedule.   The Cavaliers lost to Hazard on the road last night 65-25.  Jenkins will have a make up game from last week tonight as they host the Piarist School at Jenkins.  Varsity tipoff will be at 7:30pm.

The Letcher County Central Lady Cougars finished the regular schedule with a  21-5 record and will begin play Monday in the district tournament.
