Local Sports Wednesday January 25, 2017

After leading for most of the game, the Letcher County Central Cougar boys lost at home last to Knott County Central in a district game.    The final was Knott Central 53 LCC 46.  The Cougars were led in scoring by Torrel Carter with 23.  Austin Caudill had 4 trey's and 14 points.  The win puts Knott Central in the drivers seat for the regular season district championship.   The Cougars fall to 12-7 overall and 2-3 in the district.  LCC will next face Jenkins at home in another district game this Friday.  We'll bring you the game live here on the Bulldog with pre-game at 7.   The Cougar boys will then play at Powell County at 3:30 on Saturday.

The Letcher County Lady Cougars will next play at Breathitt County on Thursday and face Jenkins in a district game at home Saturday afternoon.

The Jenkins Lady Cavaliers will next play Hazard at home on Thursday and at Letcher County Central on Saturday.

From the 13th region Harlan will face Paintsville from the 15th region at 5pm and 14th region champion Leslie County will taking on Ky Country Day tonight at 8pm.  Good luck to all the mountain teams in the girls All A StateTournament.

The Boys All A State Tournament begins tomorrow in Frankfort with 8 opening round games. 

15th Region champ East Ridge plays Russellville at 10:00am, 14th Region champ Cordia will take on Newport Central Catholic at 11:30am tomorrow and 13th Region champion Pineville will face Owensboro Catholic tomorr at 5pm.

On a night when #1 Villanova and #2 Kansas both lost, #5 KY followed suite and lost to Tennessee in Knoxville 82-80.  Malik Monk had 25 for the cats and Bam Adebayo added 21.  Isiah Briscoe had a double double of 11 points and career high 14 rebounds.  It was the first SEC loss for the Cats, who are now 17-3 overalland 7-1 in the SEC.

The Cats will go out of conference and play in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge when they face Kansas.  Tipoff is at 6:15 with pre-game Saturday at 4:30 here on the Bulldog.

The Coach Cal Show, Big Blue Weekly and Coach Matthew Mitchell Show will all air tonight starting at 6pm here on the Bulldog.

The Letcher County Lady Cougars lost to Perry County Central 59-51 at home last night.  The Lady Cougars led by 13 with 6 minutes to go in the game when Sr. Shelby Hall fouled out.  After that it was all Perry Central as they went on a 29 to 6 run to end the game.   The Lady Cougars Sophomore Emma Maggard led LCC with 16 points, 16 rebounds and 8 blocked shots.  Shelby Hall added 16 and Paige Caudill had 9 points and 9 rebounds.   Up next the Lady Cougars will play at Breathitt County on Thursday and face Jenkins in a district game at home Saturday afternoon.

The Jenkins Lady Cavaliers will next play Hazard at home on Thursday and at Letcher County Central on Saturday.

The Letcher County Central Cougars will take on Knott County Central at home in a huge district game tonight.  Knott County Central beat LCC at Hindman on Jan 10th 71-59.  LCC is 2-2 in the district and Knott Central is at 5-1.  The LCC JV will tip off at  6 this evening with varsity at 7:30.  We'll bring you the KCC-LCC boys game tonight here on the Bulldog.  The AW Pre-game begins at 7.

LCC will also play Jenkins at home Friday and at Powell County Saturday afternoon.

Last night's Jenkins-June Buchanan boys game was postponed and rescheduled for Monday.

The Cavaliers will play South Floyd at home tonight and at Letcher County Central on Saturday.

Friday night in a 53rd district matchup the Knott County Central Lady Patriots turned a 5 point halftime lead into a 24 point win over the Letcher County Central Lady Cougars.  The final was 75-51.    LCC is now 11-8 on the season and now 4-1 in the district.  Knott Central improves to to 14-6 and stay unbeaten at 5-0 in the district.

The Lady Cougars will play Perry County Central tonight at home.  JV at 6.  Varsity at 7:30 and we'll bring you the game live here on the Bulldog.  The Appalachian Wireless pre-game show begins at 7.

The Jenkins Lady Cavaliers lost to Wolfe County at home Saturday 61-42.   They next play Hazard at home on Thursday and at Letcher County Central on Saturday.

The Letcher County Central Cougar boys picked up a 14th Region win Saturday at home beating Estill County 71-48.   The 12-6 Cougars will take on Knott County Central at LCC in a huge district game tomorrow night.  JV plays at 6 with varsity at 7:30.  We'll bring you the KCC-LCC boys game tomorrow night here on the Bulldog.  Pre-game begins at 7.

LCC will also play Jenkins at home Friday and at Powell County Saturday afternoon. 

The Jenkins Cavalier boys lost Friday at home to Leslie County 76-42 and lost Saturday at Cordia 61-27.

Maci Morris scored 18 points and had a career-high nine rebounds as the Kentucky women’s basketball team won its fourth straight game, beating Auburn 64-60 in a back-and-forth contest on Sunday afternoon at Auburn Arena.

KY is now 14-6 and 5-2 in the SEC and will return to action Thursday against Ole Miss in Lexington.  TIpoff is at 7pm.

The #5 ranked UK men overcame a sprained ankle to starting guard De-Aaron Fox on Saturday to beat #24 South Carolina at home 85-69 and take over sole possession of 1st place in the SEC.  Malik Monk had 27 and Bam Adebayo added 18 for the Cats who are now 17-2 overall and 7-0 in the SEC.

KY will visit Tennessee tomorrow night at 9pm from Knoxville.  We'll join the UK Tennessee game right before tipoff tomorrow night here on the Bulldog immediately following our coverage of the LCC Knott Central boys game.

Johny Cueto, making a bid for the last roster spot for the National League in next week's All Star Game in CIncinnati, threw a 2 hit, 11 strikeout, complete game shutout against the Nationals in Washington last night.  With the 5-0 win the Reds, 15 games back of St. Louis in th eNL Central,  have won the first 2 games of the road trip and will go for the sweep over the Nationals tonight.  Game 3 of the Nationals series will be tonight at 7:05pm.  Pre-game begins at 6:35 on AM 920 WTCW.  The Reds have 5 more games before the All Star break Monday July 13 through Thursday July 16.  That's tonight's final game at Washington and 4 at the Florida Marlins Thursday-Sunday.  The All Star game will be a week from today, Tuesday July 14th at 7:30pm at Great American Ball Park.

Sports physicals will be given at Letcher County Central High School on Thursday July 9th from 9:00am-2:00pm and also Friday July 10th from 9:00am-12 noon.  All Letcher County Central high school students who plan to participate in a sport must have a current physical on file prior to the first practice to be eligible to play.  Call LCC at 633-2339 if you have any questions.
