Kentucky Coal Academy Refresher Miner Training Course in Harlan

Today (June 20), The Kentucky Coal Academy hosted a refresher miner training course through its program at Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College in Harlan. The 8-hour refresher course is a daylong class. It requires one to already have the Kentucky Underground Miner’s card. 

 

 

Rural Kind Job Fair

Rural Kind is going to be holding a job fair starting tomorrow (June 21) to fill approximately 80 full- and part-time jobs. They are preparing to open a store in the old Kmart building in the Coal Run Village this summer. The job fair is from Tuesday to Thursday and 9 to 5 at the Coal Community Center. 

 

 

Senator Rand Paul at Shooting on Baseball Field in Alexandria Virginia

Kentucky U.S. Senator Rand Paul was standing in a batting cage, practicing his swing, when the sound of gun shots pierced the early morning quiet at a baseball field in Alexandria, Virginia yesterday (June 14). The Senator was with other legislators practicing for a charity baseball game that was scheduled for today (June 15). Paul says he was in the batting cage beyond the right field fence, and bullets were hitting the dirt of the outfield warning track. He says he saw House Majority Whip Steve Scalise get shot in the leg. The Senator says Capitol and Alexandria police saved everyone's life, and it would have been a "massacre" without them. Scalise was last reported to be in critical condition. Two capitol police officers were injured. The shooter died at the scene.

 

 

Stolen Items found in Floyd County, Possible Burglars Arrested

Floyd County Deputies discovered about 6-thousand dollars’ worth of stolen items after getting a call reporting some items had been left in an abandoned house. Investigators believe most of the items belong to a man whose home was burglarized and ransacked on Monday. Investigators say suspects were taken into custody in connection with the found items. The suspects may have also been responsible for the burglary of the KP Quick Stop early Monday morning. Christopher Andrews and Erma Gilliam were arrested while driving a stolen vehicle in Virginia.

 

 

New Entrance from Kentucky 15 Bypass into Downtown Whitesburg Aproved

Whitesburg City Council approved a plan to construct a new entrance from the Kentucky 15 bypass into the downtown Whitesburg area. The latest plan will not require the city to lose any real estate in the city parking lot at the Letcher County Veterans Museum. The new plan is expected to cost significantly less than the original 650-thousand dollars price tag. The Council voted unanimously to approve the plan; however, it is not yet known how much it will cost.
