An eight year-old Letcher County boy was killed in a bicycle accident Wednesday night.  According to Jenkins City Police, the crash happened around 8:00 p.m. on Williams Street in the Muddtown area of Jenkins.  The Jenkins Police Chief said the boy was biking down a steep hill, somehow lost control and hit his break too hard. Investigators are not sure if he was wearing a helmet when he crashed.  Police said emergency crews quickly got to the scene and tried to airlift the boy, however he was not stable enough to fly. Police said he was instead taken to Whitesburg ARH and pronounced dead at the hospital.  The 8 year old's name has not been officially released.

Kentucky State Police have arrested a man in connection with a series of copper wire thefts in Harlan County.  Timothy Shepherd, 34 of Cumberland is facing charges of Theft by Unlawful Taking and Criminal Mischief first degree.  According to detectives, the thefts happened at an Appalachian Wireless cell phone tower over the past few weeks.  A portion of the stolen copper was recovered after officers located Shepherd at a residence stripping wire May 3.  Shepherd is being lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center.

A crash involving a school bus in Lincoln County has sent 20 students and the driver of a pickup truck to area hospitals. Lincoln County Schools Superintendent told media outlets the crash happened around 8 a.m. Wednesday on Kentucky 78. She didn't know what caused the crash. the bus had at least 38 children aboard and those who were taken to hospitals didn't appear to be seriously injured. The driver of the pickup truck was air-lifted from the scene.

A local community is seeking volunteer firefighters in an effort to reopen two stations that closed nearly three years ago. The Bell County Volunteer Fire Department board shut down stations in the Colmar and Brownies Creek communities during a funding dispute with the county. Each station would need between six and 12 volunteers, who must pass training courses before they can be firefighters.

The Funeral Service Program at Southeast Kentucky Community & Technical College has gained full accreditation from the American Board of Funeral Service Education. Soon, 10 students from the program will receive their associate’s degree marking the end of a two year program as they achieved a total of 68 credit hours of learning. With degrees in hand, graduates of the Funeral Service Program will be eligible to sit for the national board examination. Additionally, graduates are required to take a state law test in order to practice in a particular state.

The Evarts Police Department, the Harlan County Sheriffs' Office, and the Harlan County Detention Center are looking for an inmate who walked away from work release in the Black Mountain section of Harlan County. 28-year-old Micheal Day escaped work release around 2:30 Tuesday. Day was last seen on Old School House Road.  Officials said Department of Corrections Officers approved Day to work outside Monday.

A handicap pool lift was recently installed at the Whitesburg Municipal Swimming Pool. To use the lift, a person must be mobile enough to sit in the chair and use the remote control to lower himself or herself into the water. The equipment cost $5,500 and labor totaled nearly $4,000. The pool lift was paid for by a partial grant awarded through the Kentucky River Area Development District and the City of Whitesburg’s general fund.
