The Letcher County United for Substance Abuse Program(USAP), Appalachian HIDTA Drug Task Force and Operation United presents a training called "Give Me A Reason" on Wednesday February 4 at 11:30am at the Harry M. Caudill Library on Main Street in Whitesburg. This drug prevention initiative is a voluntary drug testing program designed as a way for the youth to avoid peer pressure and say "no" to drug use by allowing parents to drug test their own kids and then seek help without getting police involved. The training will answer questions about why you should drug test, parental concerns, confidentiality, what type of test is used, what if the test is positive, and locations to obtain a kit. All concerned citizens and parents are invited.
Kentucky River Regional Animal Shelter is having a fundraiser to help animals at the shelter. It's called Puppy Love Portraits(pets) and will be on Monday February 2nd from 10:00am-4:00pm and Tuesday February 3rd from 1:00-7:00pm at MHC Photography's studio(Miranda Holt Combs) at 203 Main Street Suite 202 in downtown Whitesburg. There will be 20 minute photo shoots with 2 sessions to chooose from. You will then have the option to buy extra packages. These photos will be pets along with the whole family, kids and more! The Kentucky Blood Center is having a blood drive competition between Kentucky Wildcat and Florida Gator fans called the Big Blue Slam Monday January 26 through Friday January 30. All donors will receive a Big Blue Slam T-shirt and have a chance to win tickets to the 2nd and 3rd rounds of the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament in Louisville in March. They began the Florida-Kentucky blood drive battle in 2009 and both have won 3 times each. You can donate and help Kentucky win by donating blood at two Letcher County locations on Thursday January 29th. You can donate from 10am-3pm in the student loung at the Whitesburg campus of SKCTC or on the blood mobile outside Wal-Mart from 12noon-6pm. There will be a benefit fundraiser for Bridget Eldridge, Jonathan Morton and family on Saturday February 7 at the Campbell's Branch/Linefork Community Center starting at 12 noon. This family lost their home to a fire in December. Soup Bean Dinners will be sold along with other food. Activities will include live music, cake walk and an auction. Everyone is welcome!
